SYNOPSIS
Through its indigenous population, we are introduced to São Gabriel da Cachoeira, a municipality in the far northwest of Brazil, in the Alto Rio Negro basin in the northern region of the Amazon. Of the approximately 42,000 residents, more than 75% say they're of indigenous origin, and Portuguese is spoken by a minority. São Gabriel da Cachoeira is the only Brazilian municipality to have three other official languages besides Portuguese: Nheengatu, Tukano and Baniwa.
