Synopsis
The imposing building of the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura hides a rich collection and many literary treasures in its rooms and halls. “People say there are also ghosts…,” we are alerted by the director, Gilda Santos, who accompanied our visit. Immersed in an atmosphere of complete historical mystery, we found many secrets which the general public has no access to; among them, old manuscripts of “Amor de Perdição,” by Camilo Castelo Branco, and “Tu, só tu, puro amor,” by Machado de Assis, and one print of the first edition of “Os Lusíadas” from 1572.
